University of Winnipeg – Centennial Hall
2010
University of Winnipeg, Canada
Commissioned by Serena Keshavjee University of Winnipeg, Canada
The Duckworth Hallway installation is part of a larger project to revitalize Centennial Hall, a building much celebrated during the 1970s. The hallway is enlivened with a wide range of colours that highlight rather than hide the structural trusses of the architecture, referring to the original design conception for the building. The colour strategy combines a glossy white treatment on the walls of the bridge with a matt multi-colour approach to the truss members. The colour family combines bright colours with earthy tones, defining the edges of the truss that are perpendicular to the wall. The parallel edges of the truss members are matt white. Other infrastructure, such as ceiling piping, are also painted white so that the multi-colour trusses concentrate a clear, yet rich, experience of spatial colour. Applying colour only to the perpendicular edges allows a constantly shifting set of colours and colour shadows, emphasized for the moving pedestrian by the parallel white tones. As we walk through this suspended corridor, the serial play of strong hues creates a kinetic, kaleidoscopic, potentially mood altering effect.
