Request For Proposals Halifax Regional Municipality
Our proposal for the Halifax Central Library could be characterized as a social sculpture, combining aesthetic and social approaches in order to complement the minimalist architecture style with a highly visible and interactive art installation. The installation employs a system of six modules, each a variation of a three‐plate assemblage that is designed in relation to the human body and that are combined together in various ways. By using three different fabrication techniques and by proposing site‐specific assemblages at three separate locations in the library, the system has the potential to activate a wide range of interactions. Each installation can accommodate multiple functions ranging from quiet reading, intimate conversations and informal meetings, to small gatherings such as a book reading, as well as many other possibilities. Conceived as structures to be interpreted and ‘detourned’ by the visitor, the assemblages are intended to inspire new forms of public interaction between semi‐private, semi‐public and public, and providing a new way to inhabit the building with both functional and aesthetic implications.
