x1,x2,x3 Totem and Taboo
2011
Freiraum quartier21, MuseumsQuartier Vienna, Austria
Exhibited in ‘Totem and Taboo’ at Freiraum Quartier21
x1, x2, x3 directs a segment of light from the expansive windows of the Frieraum gallery, dividing and reflecting it through three coloured spaces to finally mix together in a white posterior chamber that is accessible for the visitor. The site-specific installation articulates a mysterious interzone between inside and outside, between autonomy and context. The form of the piece embodies the coloured articulation of the window light for a human scale while clearly responding to the exhibition context itself. The fluctuating light not only indicates an interiority of the installation as animated ‘object’, but allows the piece to be structured by a (non-representational) colour-space that is both a zone of projection and experience. Overall, the piece provides an experiential frame for the shifting correspondence between inner and outer realms, while unlocking the existing potentials of its context for spatial division.Description
